Why Transcorp Hilton Hotels remain open during lockdown

The decision by Transcorp Hotels not to close down during the lockdown has been hailed by the MD/CEO, Dupe Olusola, who described it as one of the best decisions they made. According to the MD, the decision gave them clarity on the hygiene standards they wanted to maintain as they constantly trained the staff on operating cleaning protocols and set guidelines from health experts to get to where the group is now. This is coming on the heels of the African Union’s (AU) estimate that Africa’s tourism industry lost about $55 billion in Travel and Tourism revenue to the COVID-19. Making the remark at the Africa Tomorrow Hospitality conference during her spotlight discussion led by Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, Founder and Chairman on APO Group, a pan African communications Consultancy, she said the key priority of its properties, Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Transcorp Hotels Calabar, is safety amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our learning curve has been quick as we are better prepared more than eve...

A kenyan friend savours Lagos, Africa’s biggest metropolis My Kenyan friend, Shirley Nailantei, runs a great travel and tour operations agency, Convette Group, based in Nairobi with another office in Kigali, Rwanda. From her bases, she plans and runs her businesses and takes tourists through throughout Africa, America, Europe, Middle East and Asia. Last year was her first time in Nigeria, and particularly Lagos. She was here for an international women empowerment event. Her experience that first time inspired her to return again in November as a visitor to be part of one of biggest and most vibrant travel trade exhibitions, Akwaaba African Travel Market, which holds at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, Nigeria. Interestingly, the event was holding at the Civic Center on Ozumba Mbadiwe road, Victoria Island. It was meant to be a normal sightseeing drive through the city of Calabar  aboard the Rovosta open-roofed bus. It turned a great everyone one of us, both to the tourists and to the travel writers, a discovery of a whole new side of Calabar. Several of us have visited Calabar not once and obviously not twice. And as a curious traveller myself, I’ve explored everything the ancient city has to offer from its food to its carnival, from dawn to its dusk; and from the city center to its suburbs - I mean that I’ve explored everything! And I didn’t the erotic sides! This time the tour took me a step away from the usual and took us out to the core historical aspects that actually led to where the city is today. Calabar is mo...
